Breast Cancer retreat opens in Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Thursday, February 8, 2018

The OTIS Foundation, a charity that provides retreat accommodation at no cost to women dealing with breast cancer, has established its newest property at North Maleny in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Nunyara Treehouse is a stunning two bedroom cottage situated in a stunning forest setting overlooking nearby farmland. Generous property owners, the Wright family, have chosen to make it available to women dealing with breast cancer to escape the daily emotional challenges of the disease.

Jenny Wright has her own personal experience with breast cancer and understands the importance of support from family and friends. She feels she would not have survived without the incredible support from her two adult children. Her son Derek built the cottage and is thrilled that it will be used as an OTIS retreat.

“I distinctly remember being touched by the fact that people would offer their holiday homes as retreats and vowed to join the movement at a later date. I do hope my little cottage can help lift spirits and provide some peace for women struggling through this journey. They need to know they’re not forgotten and that strangers care.” said Jenny.

General Manager of The OTIS Foundation, Rachel Mason, said that Nunyara Treehouse is one of five properties available to Queensland women to stay within the Sunshine State, “The vision of The OTIS Foundation is to provide a national network of retreat accommodation to help reduce the psychological impacts of breast cancer to women and their families.” Mrs Mason said.

“Each year we make close to 4,000 night’s accommodation available at no cost, however, there is great demand for our service in Queensland where we currently have more than 100 families waiting for a stay. We are genuinely thankful that the Wright family has chosen to donate time at their cottage and would encourage other individuals who may be interested in offering time at their second property or holiday home to contact us.” Mrs Mason added.

Anyone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer is eligible to stay at an OTIS Foundation property at no cost along with their family and friends.

Stays at Nunyara Treehouse are available midweek and subject to availability. For more information on  making your property available to OTIS guests visit our page on Donating Time at your Property.
